The Sin of Aging

What a crazy people we are! I wonder if it's possible to please us.

Perhaps you've heard that many have publicly criticized Carrie Fisher following the release of the latest Star Wars movie for committing a crime that simply will not be tolerated. She aged!!!

The 59 year old actress has been the recipient of several tweets containing very unkind remarks about her appearance. (I wonder...did people think she would still be 19??)

At the same time, those in Hollywood who attempt to halt the aging process with plastic surgery are equally made the butt of criticism and cruel remarks about their unnatural appearance. The message is clear that there's no way to win.

The NIV renders Proverbs 31:30 with the words, "Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting..." That is a truth our modern culture chooses to ignore as the desire to stay young and beautiful trumps all other goals.

As followers of Christ we understand that there's a timeless beauty that cannot be seen in a mirror and that transcends everything physical. Peter described it as "the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit." (1 Peter 3:4) The passing of time cannot dull or steal this beauty, and it's high time we give it the real praise it deserves.

"...a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised." (Proverbs 31:30)
